In the days of Daniel Boone, settlers gathered at a place called the Block House near present day Gate City, Virginia, until they felt they had sufficient numbers to safely head off into the wilderness. The first major obstacle to overcome on their journey was crossing the Halsted River. This swinging bridge spans the very spot where Boone and thousands of other settlers crossed into the wilderness.
