Whew!

The film is in the can and we're in post-production after a relatively painless 5 week shoot that wrapped in late August 1998. The pace was hectic, but for the most part, it went off without a hitch. Thanks to our dedicated crew of film professionals and interns we came in on schedule and on budget. No small feat considering that THIS TRAIN is the first feature film to originate entirely in Cincinnati.

Production Highlights

THIS TRAIN was written and directed by Cincinnati poet/playwright Aralee Strange. Although THIS TRAIN marks her debut as a writer/director, Strange has many years of film production experience. Her dramatic work has been produced professionally and broadcast nationally on NPR.

THIS TRAIN boasts an impressive lineup of local artists, musicians and poets whose work has received acclaim regionally and nationally. Comic legend Soupy Sales and four New York-based Principals led the ensemble cast which includes more than 50 regional actors and close to 100 extras. Check out the Supporting Players page for more information.

Cinematographer Sylvain D'Hautcourt was Director of Photography on the shoot. Originally from Belgium, D'Hautcourt now lives in New York City. Cincinnati native Sarah Young served as Production Designer. Young was a valuable addition to THIS TRAIN. She has worked in the art department of numerous feature films around the country.

Principal photography for THIS TRAIN took place in Adams County, OH, Cincinnati's historic Over The Rhine district, and at The Kentucky Railway Museum in New Haven, KY.

THIS TRAIN was shot in color on Super 16mm film stock using an Aaton XTR Prod. The camera package was rented from Armanda Costanza, Inc. in Nashville, TN.

The Revival scene was shot in the beautiful Appalachian hills of Eastern, OH. Several scenes were filmed at the Churn Creek Christian Church in Adams County. Built in the 1920's, this one-room church was an ideal choice for the film's opening.

Kaldi's Cafe, located in the heart of Cincinnati's Over The Rhine district is the main urban setting of the film. Many hours went into the transformation of Kaldi's which became The Sad Cafe.

Designed and built by Tom Paul, an art department consultant, the Homeless Encampment was one of the most elaborate sets of the film - taking weeks of planning, several days to construct, and hours each night to prepare more than 40 actors into elaborate costumes and make-up.

Independent filmmaker John Holser is making a documentary about independent film, tentatively entitled LIGHTS, CAMERA, CREDIT CARDS. He has been traveling around the east coast following five independent productions, one of which is THIS TRAIN. Holser's project has a website featuring THIS TRAIN and other films he's been covering. The documentary will be completed next year. Visit his website, indidog.com, and register to win a free trip to Sundance in 2000.

The support from Cincinnati area businesses was tremendous. Please see our Sponsor page for more information and please patronize these establishments whenever possible.
