Million Man March

a sea

an ocean

a flood of tears

and hugs

daps and slaps

nappy male love

one million caps

and crowns and

burnt brass faces

whoever said it was less

didn't count noses

or wet eyes

didn't hear the black thunder

echo

or feel the wave of trust

that almost launched

the Egyptian monument

pretending to belong

to washington

its a new day black man

and an early Kwanzaa

for mothers and babies

who search

the stars at night

wishing for their sugar

looking for their daddies

one million men

no niggers

one million

one soul

for real columbuses

re-discovering themselves

finally being woman enough to

give birth

to a new idea

new attitudes

a new direction

a new day

if only one

sober

solemn

sincere

son, brother, cousin, uncle

father, granddaddy or husband

had shown up

it still would have been

one magnificent

holy day

but it was

much more than that

a million times

more.
