W.E.B. DuBois Academy for Prospective Teachers

A Residential Program for Minority Students Interested in a Teaching Career

June 18 July 2, 2000

The DuBois Academy is a 15 day residential program for gifted and talented minority students who will be entering the 10th grade. This summer program is designed for students who have an interest in or think they may pursue teaching as a career.

Both the academic and professional aspects of the teaching profession will be emphasized. The role of an educator, with attention to minority issues, will be explored.

The program is composed of two phases. Phase I helps students develop leadership and interpersonal skills that are so necessary for the successful teacher. The examination of cultural backgrounds and the diversity of our society is also a part of this phase.

In Phase II, all students will be involved in two academic tracks one from a mathematics/science strand and the other from a liberal arts strand. Each track will include academic and teaching responsibilities.

Students will have daily use of campus Physical Education facilities and participate in on-campus social and recreational activities. There will also be an opportunity to visit some of Cleveland's cultural and entertainment areas.
